In the battle against rodents, Penang Island City Council (MBPP) is taking a high-tech approach, utilizing endoscopes to inspect hidden drainage systems. This innovative strategy, also known as borescopes, is already proving its worth in countries like Japan, Singapore, Australia, and Britain, and now it's making its way to Malaysia. During a recent clean-up operation at Tanjung Bungah Market, an endoscope was fed into concealed drainage, revealing clogged sections and, more alarmingly, the presence of rats. The footage was crucial in identifying the problem areas, leading to immediate action to clear the drain and improve cleanliness.
This method is not just about finding rats; it's about understanding their behavior and environment. Rats are adept at hiding in the most unexpected places, from drainpipes to cracks under floors. By using endoscopes, authorities can pinpoint problem areas and implement targeted solutions. The mayor, Datuk A. Rajendran, emphasized the importance of systematic rat control, which involves not only eliminating food sources but also reducing rat harborage and using suitable control methods. This multi-faceted approach is crucial in preventing the spread of diseases like leptospirosis, salmonellosis, and hantavirus, which can be transmitted through rat urine, droppings, or contaminated food and water.
The MBPP's efforts extend beyond the use of endoscopes. They are also destroying rat nests, improving food waste management, and educating traders and the public. Tan Soo Siang, the alternate chairman of the council's public health standing committee, highlights the importance of shared responsibility in maintaining cleanliness. The campaign, running from April to July, aims to control rat breeding, reduce the risk of leptospirosis, and improve urban cleanliness. The results are impressive, with 57,723 rats eliminated between 2022 and June this year. However, the real success lies in the long-term commitment to keeping the environment clean enough to prevent rats from breeding.
