For years, I've relied on Feedly to keep me informed, but lately, I've discovered two minimalist Android apps that have completely replaced it. I'll share my experience and why I made the switch, along with my thoughts on the future of RSS readers.
The RSS Revival
I've been a loyal RSS user for almost half my life, enduring the demise of Google Reader and navigating through various services with my trusty OPML file. The control it offers is unparalleled, allowing me to curate my feed with independent blogs, large publications, and dedicated tech sites like Android Authority. It's a personalized experience, and you can find RSS sources everywhere, from Bluesky and Mastodon to YouTube and subreddits.
Feedly's Evolution
Feedly emerged as a spiritual successor to Google Reader, but over time, it has evolved into more of a content platform than an RSS reader. The app curates the day's top stories, hiding my chronological feed in the sidebar. It prompts me to upgrade and integrate AI, and its free plan doesn't automatically show full-text views for truncated feeds. While functional, it looks dated and lacks customization options.
Read You: A Minimalist Haven
I discovered Read You, a free, open-source RSS reader with a sleek, Material You-inspired design. It provides a delightful reading experience, akin to a paperback book, with a customizable interface. I can switch themes, fonts, and even adjust text spacing and padding. The OLED black theme is perfect for early-morning reading, and it supports Android's dynamic colors, adapting to my changing wallpapers.
Read You offers all the RSS features I need: notifications, folder organization, and even article playback. However, it's still pre-1.0, and I eagerly await a widget and Feedly sync integration. I can sync via Fever, the Google Reader API, or FreshRSS, or simply import my OPML file.
FeedFlow: The Dependable Workhorse
FeedFlow is another excellent RSS reader, available on the Play Store and across multiple platforms. It's a mature, stable option, allowing me to import OPML files or connect to services like FreshRSS and Miniflux. I appreciate its text-only layout and OLED black theme, which make early-morning reading a breeze. The widget is a game-changer, refreshing every 30 minutes with the latest articles, a feature I wish Read You had.
My Personal Choice
While I lean towards Read You for its reading experience, I still use FeedFlow throughout the day. FeedFlow's widget and text-only interface are perfect for quick news checks. I'm open to a well-themed Material You widget from Read You in the future, but for now, I'm content with my customized, minimal news-reading experience, free from distractions and under my control.
